The Texans will be faced with a good problem to have this summer; there is much more depth and some tough choices will have to be made.

With OTAs beginning this week in Houston, we will soon know which players are impressing and which could be on the chopping block come August.

Before OTAs begin, let's take a look at the position groups that should be the most interesting to watch this summer.

Wide Receiver

In 2022, the Texans boasted one of the least-talented receiver rooms in the league. In 2023, that shouldn't be a problem.

To be fair, the Texans' receiver room is not great. Unless rookie Tank Dell or John Metchie III explode on the scene, there doesn't seem to be a No. 1 receiver on the roster. There is, however, more talent overall.

Robert Woods comes to Houston to provide a veteran presence and should be a roster lock. Noah Brown and Steven Sims were also signed in free agency and should make the team. Nico Collins is still in Houston and could take a step forward in 2023. Rookie Tank Dell makes the team and could be a solid vertical threat immediately.

Finally, John Metchie III will make his much-anticipated pro debut. This means that all six presumed receiver spots could be accounted for.

It will be interesting to see if rookie Xavier Hutchinson or speedster Amari Rodgers can force their way onto the roster with an impressive summer.

Running back

The starting running back will undoubtedly be Dameon Pierce barring any unforseen issues.

However, the team added a few interesting pieces this off-season to compete for backup roles. Rex Burkhead is no longer on the roster, so someone will need to replace the veteran's production. Burkhead collected 37 catches in 2022 and was a solid pass-catching option.

Devin Singletary was signed from the Buffalo Bills this off-season, and he is known as a quality pass-catcher. Additionally, the team brought in bruising back Mike Boone and UDFA Xazavian Valladay. Special teams' star Dare Ogunbowale is still on the roster, as is former seventh-round pick Gerrid Doaks.

Pierce and Singletary should be viewed as locks, as well as Ogunbowale due to his special teams prowess. The fourth spot (if there is one) could be an interesting battle between Valladay, Doaks, and Boone.

Valladay was extremely productive in college, racking up over 1,000 rushing yards three times. The former Sun Devil and Cowboy also showcased pass-catching ability, catching 37 balls in 2022.

While Pierce and Singletary will get the majority of carries, Valladay, Doaks, or Boone could play a rotational role with a strong summer showing.

Defensive tackle

This could be the position group that has improved the most this off-season.

Veteran run-stuffers Sheldon Rankins and Hassan Ridgeway were signed in free agency and should be a major improvement to 2022's last-placed run defense. It is presumed that Rankins will start alongside veteran Maliek Collins. Ridgeway will see the field plenty as a rotational piece.

Behind that trio of veterans are Roy Lopez, Kurt Hinish, Thomas Booker IV, and Byron Cowart. Lopez started in 2022 but struggled mightily, ending with a 52.7 PFF grade. Hinish, Booker, Cowart, or perhaps an outside addition could challenge Lopez for the fourth defensive tackle spot.

Final Thoughts: The Texans likely are not ready to contend in 2023, but there's no denying that the roster is improved. After a couple seasons of having a talent-deprived roster, the team now has youth and depth. There is finally a light at the end of the tunnel in Houston.
