In free agency, the team added several new starters including Tremaine Edmunds and TJ Edwards on defense and Nate Davis on offense. Additionally, talented receiver DJ Moore was added to the roster after the Bears traded the No. 1 pick to the Carolina Panthers.
With OTAs beginning this week, I wanted to take a look at a few position groups that could be set up for intense competition this summer.
Running back
For the first time in several years, the Bears will have a new starting RB in 2023. This is after former starter David Montgomery bolted for the rival Detroit Lions in free agency.
To replace the solid back, the Bears signed D'Onta Foreman and Travis Homer in free agency. Roschon Johnson was drafted in the fourth round out of Texas, and Khalil Herbert is still on the roster as well.
For now, Foreman is listed as the starter. Foreman has always impressed when given snaps, he has just been behind two elite running backs Derrick Henry and Christian McCaffrey. After the Panthers traded McCaffrey in 2022, Foreman took over and delivered impressive results. The former Texan, Titan, and Panther collected 914 rushing yards in 2022.
Herbert has shown flashes in limited snaps but has not looked like a primary back to this point. Johnson impressed at Texas but was stuck behind the immensely talented Bijan Robinson. Homer was the other free agent signing, but he has mostly played on special teams in his career.
One could make the case that any of Foreman, Herbert, or Johnson will end the season as the lead back.
Defensive tackle
Defensive tackle will be an interesting position group due to the new additions.
Veteran Andrew Billings was brought in in free agency, and Zacch Pickens, Gervon Dexter Sr., and Travis Bell were added in the 2023 NFL Draft. The Bears were the second-worst team in the league in 2022 against the run and collected the fewest sacks.
Billings, Dexter, and Pickens are all known for run-stuffing ability, so that should help one problem. Billings will start at one of the defensive tackle spots, while Justin Jones will likely start at the other spot.
Can Jones hold off the two rookies? Don't be surprised if either Dexter or Pickens ends up stealing a starting gig with a strong summer.
Corner
This position group will be interesting due to the youth in the room. By all accounts, second-round CB Tyrique Stevenson has impressed at team activities thus far.
The Bears' pass defense was average in 2022, finishing 18th in passing yards allowed. Jaylon Johnson is locked into one starting spot, and Kyler Gordon will be the nickel. This leaves one starting corner position open for the taking.
Currently, the rookie Stevenson is favored to secure the job. Also in the running are Kindle Vildor, Michael Ojemudia, Jaylon Jones, and rookie Terrell Smith.
I would not rule out a veteran addition to this group. While the current corners in Chicago have a ton of potential, it is a very young group that could benefit from a veteran presence. It will be interesting to see how this position battle plays out over the coming months.
