Giants' newly signed WR may already be on his way out after this week

What the New York Giants lack in top-end quality at the receiver position, they make up for in sheer quantity.
Second-year players, veterans, and rookies all make up a group that has something to prove in 2023.
But with only 53 men able to make a roster, the first impression for these wideouts may be a lasting one. That starts with OTA's this week and could spell the beginning of the end for some players.
If you're reading this on Monday, May 22nd, then welcome to day one of the installation of the 2023 season. The Giants officially begin organized team activities today, as the offseason rolls into minicamp before a six-week break and then training camp into the regular season.
Hard to believe it's almost that time, but here we are. So today, Im going to take a look at the positional battle at wide receiver, explaining the depth of the position and who may be in and or out, starting as soon as this week. Here's how the WR room is currently constructed alphabetically:
- Parris Campbell
- Jamison Crowder
- Bryce Ford-Wheaton
- Isaiah Hodgins
- Jalin Hyatt
- Collin Johnson
- Jaydon Mickens
- Kalil Pimpleton
- Makai Polk
- Wan'Dale Robinson
- Sterling Shepard
- David Sills
- Darius Slayton
- Jeff Smith
A whooping 14 names as we kick off the offseason, come September, this list will be cut in half at most, as teams typically carry six or seven receivers on the active, 53-man roster.
And sure, there are certain players that barring an obscene circumstance, their place in the room is safe. Names like last year's leading receiver Darius Slayton or last month's third-round pick Jalin Hyatt come to mind.
But after that, this could go any which way in terms of the team-building dynamic. Two recently signed additions that will have a steep hill to climb are veteran wide receiver Jeff Smith and rookie undrafted free agent Bryce Ford Wheaton.
Smith was signed on a one-year deal in free agency and is on a contract that has no guaranteed money, making this week very important for him. As for Ford-Wheaton, any undrafted player has to start strong, and this week will be no different.
Wheaton is the younger of the two and while he's a project, his measurables are enticing as they include:
Height: 6'3" 3/4"
Weight: 221 lb
40 time: 4.38 Sec
Vertical: 41 in
Time will tell who wins out and who misses the cut, but many of the players listed above will soon be on other teams this fall. That means every rep matters and every detail counts, and that starts today.
