Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay didn't appreciate a recent ESPN report that indicated the Washington Commanders had "looked into" Andrew Luck as a potential quarterback option earlier this offseason.
After the report came out, Irsay took to social media to let it be known that any attempt to contact the former Colts' No. 1 overall pick would result in a violation of the NFL's tampering policy.
However, Monday's news cycle helped clear the air surrounding the controversy involving the Commanders and the man who Colts fans to get over following the arrival of QB Anthony Richardson.
Per ESPN's Stephen Holder, the Commanders "never spoke to Luck or anyone in his immediate circle and therefore did not violate the NFL's anti-tampering policy."
Such a finding is a result of a tampering inquiry that emerged after the original report suggesting Washington had "looked into it." Perhaps the latest news means the report was inaccurate or perhaps "looking into it" just meant somebody casually bringing up Luck's name in a meeting and nothing else. We might never know.
Luck has been very clear about his present and future: His playing days are over. And he's happy and comfortable with that. His career will remain one of the biggest What If? stories in NFL history and that's okay.
But I won't blame Colts fans who got a tiny bit nervous about the very remote possibility of Luck returning to play for another team. That was never going to happen and the latest report just confirmed it.
