The Dallas Cowboys have made a return to the field as the first session of OTAs has commenced. At the moment, no live contact is permitted but teams can run 7-on-7, 7-on-9, and 11-on-11 drills during practice.
These activities are voluntary so it's not the end of the world if players choose not to attend. However, putting forth the extra effort goes a long way when it comes to chemistry and team building.
When the Cowboys took the field on Tuesday, their best player, All-Pro linebacker/edge Micah Parsons was in attendance.
Parsons has been working out in Austin, Texas during the offseason. He spent time with retired offensive lineman Andrew Whitworth recently to fine-tune some things about his game, and he's been bulking up to prepare for the physical toll it takes to play on the defensive line.
The former first-round pick said he was getting himself ready for a full-time switch to playing on the edge. However, Cowboys' defensive coordinator Dan Quinn put that notion to bed.
“He’s a pass-rushing linebacker," Quinn said. "If you ever need position changes, come to me. What I think he was probably trying to say is, ‘I’m really emphasizing some pass rush into my offseason.’”
No matter how Parsons is characterized he's been nothing but dominant since he came to the NFL. He's put up 26.5 sacks, 33 tackles for loss, 56 quarterback hits, 157 pressures, and 100 hurries. Mind you, he doesn't rush the passer full-time.
Parsons has gotten better in some way every year since he came into the league. That progression has taken place because Parsons is willing to pick the brains of other elite players, work hard on his training, and as he showed on Tuesday, Parsons won't leave any stone unturned.
So, just end all the speculation now and name Parsons an All-Pro again because another big-time year is coming.
