The Chicago Bears are hosting the first three organized team activities (OTAs) of the summer this week.
OTAs are purely voluntary and players cannot be fined for not attending. Each team is allowed to host 10 OTAs during the offseason, so the Bears will have seven remaining after this week.
On Tuesday, head coach Matt Eberflus had the perfect response when asked about players who chose not to attend the practice.
One media member brought up the fact that OTA participation used to be much higher, and now it is not uncommon for several notable names to skip the practices. Eberflus was asked if this was "a disappointment."
"It's a voluntary deal, ya know, and that's the way it is," explained Eberflus. "There's nothing you can do to get upset about it. We're going to coach the guys that are here."
The Bears only had four players not in attendance on Tuesday, but all four are vital pieces. Eddie Jackson, Jaylon Johnson, Nate Davis, and Darnell Mooney did not attend, while Travis Homer and Jack Sanborn attended but did not participate.
Eberflus was then asked about the absence of Johnson, and if this situation was reminiscent of the Roquan Smith situation a year ago.
"Yeah I don't see it like that," said Eberflus.
Finally, the coach was asked if Johnson notified the team about his absence.
"I'm not going to comment on that," explained Eberflus. "Ask him (Johnson) when you see him."
Johnson is entering the final year of his rookie contract and has made it known that he would like to get an extension done.
The Bears will have Wednesday and Thursday off before having another OTA on Friday.
