Quarterback Justin Fields has a lot to prove in 2023 if he's going to earn a contract extension from the Chicago Bears next offseason.
Fields, who is entering his third year in the NFL, showed flashes of brilliance last season during the Bears' 3-14 campaign.
The former Ohio State standout showed that he can be electric in the open field. Fields also showed that he has one of the best deep balls in the league. In 2023, he'll need to prove he can consistently show his brilliance.
If Fields finds that consistency in 2023, he'll likely have his fifth-year option picked up by the Bears next spring. And he might even earn the contract extension that every quarterback hopes to receive after their fourth season.
A potential contract extension, however, isn't on Fields' radar. Instead, all he's worried about in 2023 is winning games and getting to the playoffs.
"I'm not worried about contracts, I'm worried about wins," said Fields this week (via ESPN). "I could care less."
"Every year's a big year," added Fields. "I don't really have anything to expand on that. For me, every year's a big year and I'm excited to show it."
A lot has been said about Fields' elite leadership abilities dating back to his days at Ohio State. These statements from Fields show that the talk about his leadership isn't just lip service.
Fields knows that if Chicago wins games, the contract situation will take care of itself. The fact that Fields is focused on winning more than his contract is something that should have a major impact on the locker room.
If the leader of the team doesn't have his focus in the right place, it's going to be really tough to create a winning culture.
Fortunately for the Bears, that's not an issue with Fields leading the charge. Winning is all that matters for Fields. And he's going to make sure that the entire locker room feels the same way.
