Following the signing of kicker Brandon McManus, the Jacksonville Jaguars stated on their official website that "Additionally, the team has waived K Riley Patterson."

The lie detector determined that was a lie.

Just hours after the original announcement, the Jaguars ended up trading Patterson to the Detroit Lions, per NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. Talk about a win-win curveball at the last moment.

The move is not all that surprising considering Patterson and the Lions are already familiar. The 23-year-old played seven games with Detroit in 2021 and he went 13-for-14 in field goal attempts.

In return, the Jaguars aren't getting much, which leads us to believe the Lions probably heard the news and decided to throw GM Trent Baalke a tiny draft asset for them to ensure the rights for Riley Patterson. Per Aaron Wilson, it's a conditional seventh-round selection for the 2026 NFL Draft. Emphasis on 2026. We're three drafts away!

Even still, it's more than what the Jags would've gotten by straight-up waiving which would amount to a big whole of nothing. Baalke is probably smiling as we speak.

It also serves as an immediate chance for redemption for Patterson, who still has a job albeit in a different state. He'll compete with Michael Badgley for the job on Dan Campbell's knee-cap-biting team.
