Jared Goff was statistically one of the best quarterbacks in the league in 2022. After a couple of mediocre seasons, somehow Goff returned to his best form showcased earlier in his career with the Rams. Why the sudden turnaround?
Well, Goff has the luxury of playing behind one of the best offensive lines in the NFL. Only the Tampa Bay Buccaneers allowed fewer sacks in 2022. Additionally, The Dan Campbell/Brian Johnson offense is perfect for Goff's quick release throwing style.
One national media outlet recently pointed out the reasons why Detroit's offense works so well these days.
Jordan Schultz of The Score identified the strength of each NFC North team. For the Lions, the offensive line was an easy choice for Schultz.
Schultz said the following regarding the Lions' fortress:
You have to protect in the NFC North, and GM Brad Holmes knows it. The Lions have built a fortress around Jared Goff as a result. No position so important receives less fanfare than center, but Detroit has one of the best in the business in Pro Bowler Frank Ragnow. Equally important: There's not a better pair of tackles than Pro Bowlers Taylor Decker (LT) and Penei Sewell (RT), the seventh pick in the 2021 draft who boasted a stellar 80.6 grade, per PFF (and who's still just 22!). Meanwhile, left guard Jonah Jackson also earned a Pro Bowl nod in 2021, allowing zero sacks and committing only four penalties in 2022.
Not to take anything away from Goff, but it would be hard to not look amazing when you have that line protecting you.
The Lions no longer have the talented D'Andre Swift or Jamaal Williams in the backfield, but one could argue that rookie Jahmyr Gibbs and veteran David Montgomery form an even better combo.
Amon-Ra St. Brown has blossomed into a true No. 1 receiver, and the team also added rookie tight end Sam LaPorta. These weapons coupled with arguably the best line in the game could equate to the best offense in the league in 2023.
