The Texans' roster has overgone a massive overhaul this offseason after being one of the worst teams in the league in 2022. With the initial wave of free agency and the draft behind us, the team is likely done with big additions.
The team's secondary was actually a bright spot in 2022, and the team has added even more depth. On Tuesday, an interesting depth piece was added.
The Texans were awarded Tyree Gillespie off waivers from the Jacksonville Jaguars. Gillespie will continue his tour of the AFC South, having been traded to the Tennessee Titans before the 2022 season.
Gillespie would not last in Tennessee, and was released prior to the regular season. The former Missouri Tiger would soon latch on with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Gillespie saw action in just three games in Jacksonville, mostly on special teams.
With teams making roster cuts to clear room for rookies, Gillespie was deemed expendable in Jacksonville. However, the Texans' depth in the secondary could use some upgrades. There is a path for Gillespie to make the roster here behind Jalen Pitre, Jimmie Ward, and MJ Stewart.
Gillespie will try to carve a role out on special teams. His main competition will be 2023 seventh-rounder Brandon Hill and UDFA Darius Joiner.
