The Chiefs had a fantastic draft, as far as things go on paper. Obviously, we still need to see these guys play. We need to see them in action against NFL talent and not their conference they played in college. This is a big difference compared to college, and they will show that soon in rookie minicamp.
Even the day three guys will be able to have an impact on this team eventually Maybe not right away, or maybe not even this year, but we know the Chiefs are so good at developing players that it will happen. One of their day three picks could actually have an impact sometimes this year, especially when you hear what the Chiefs own scouts had to say about him.
Keondre Coburn, the defensive tackle from Texas, could end up making some plays for the Chiefs. While he was just a sixth-round pick, and those guys don't pan out more often than they do, I have fait he could be something in Kansas City.
Let's go back to free agency, when the Chiefs lost a very underrated player on their defense. Defensive tackle Khalen Saunders ended up signing with the New Orleans Saints, and was the Chiefs run stuffer in the middle. He was also the only player to have a sack in the Super Bowl.
Well, the Chiefs need to find someone to replace him at that defensive tackle depth spot, and they did. Coburn is big and strong, just like Saunders. His burst is quick for his size too. He will be the third defensive tackle in the depth chart, if he makes the roster, and could slowly work his way up.
Here is what one Chiefs scout had to say about Coburn:
"He brings a lot of energy. He's played a lot of football. He's definitely going to be a valuable piece in the defensive line room."
I hate continuing to compare the two because Saunders is a well established veteran now and Coburn is not. But, that description is exactly what Saunders brought to the team.
This guy, if he gets a huge chance, will be a helpful player. Now we just have to see if he can put it together in the offseason.
