While betting on the Detroit Lions hasn’t been a financially responsible decision for the better part of two decades, it appears as though times are changing. Oddsmakers in Las Vegas have already listed the Lions as the betting favorites in the NFC North, but their latest futures bet seems to debunk a national narrative surrounding the team.

The Lions were heavily scrutinized by those in the media, and even some fans for drafting Alabama RB Jahmyr Gibbs with the 12th overall pick in the 2023 Draft. Gibbs wasn’t expected to come off of the board so soon, especially considering how the running back position has been devalued in general.

That didn’t stop general manager Brad Holmes and head coach Dan Campbell from nabbing the dynamic threat out of the backfield. They looked mighty happy with their decision as well.

The move makes more sense now that Detroit has shipped D’Andre Swift off to the Philadelphia Eagles. But perhaps this wasn’t such a wild decision after all. BetMGM believes there’s a legitimate chance that Gibbs walks away with the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award.

Offensive Rookie of the Year Odds, per BetMGM:

  • Bijan Robinson: +300
  • Bryce Young: +500
  • C.J. Stroud: +650
  • Jaxon Smith-Njigba: + 700
  • Jahmyr Gibbs/Anthony Richardson: +900
  • Jordan Addison: +1600

*All other rookies listed at +2000 or greater.

It’s expected to be David Montgomery’s backfield in Detroit with Gibbs serving as the change-of-pace back who can do serious damage in the passing game.

While those in the digital media world are snickering at the Lions’ decision to draft Gibbs, the folks down in the desert sure seem to respect the player. And there aren’t tall buildings and bright lights in Las Vegas by coincidence. They have a reputation for knowing what they’re talking about.
