The Indianapolis Colts made some key selections in the 2023 NFL Draft. Obviously, none bigger than picking quarterback Anthony Richardson at No. 4 overall to solidify the most important position on the roster.
With that said, the Colts also made sure to surround Richardson with other talent. Indianapolis did seem to focus more on the defensive side of the ball in the draft. However, one of their key choices came in the third-round.
Indianapolis grabbed North Carolina wideout Josh Downs with its third selection of the draft. Downs is a productive pass catcher that went for more than 1k receiving yards in each of his final two seasons on the collegiate level.
Downs has the ability to do damage out of the slot. He is on the smaller side, but he is a quarterbacks best friend in the short and intermediate passing game. That's where the selection makes a lot of sense for Richardson and the Colts.
So much sense that a franchise legend made it clear that he needed the pick to be made. That franchise legend just so happens to be the team's wide receivers coach, Reggie Wayne. Wayne expressed that to Downs when the pick was made.
"I was talking to Reggie Wayne a few weeks ago," Downs explained to the media shortly after hearing his name called. "He told me he needed me."
Downs now joins a wide receivers corps that is led by Michael Pittman Jr. and Alec Pierce. Isaiah McKenzie was added to the team in free agency. But it was clear that the Colts needed more weapons on the roster for Steichen — and now Richardson.
Josh Downs has the opportunity to carve out a significant role as a rookie. It's clear that his position coach is thrilled about being able to coach him in Indianapolis. Which should only lead to good things.
