The Texans made another under-the-radar move on Saturday that could pay huge dividends.

Shortly after the 2023 NFL Draft, I wrote about the three areas that the Texans could still improve. The secondary was among that list, which I felt lacked quality depth.

General manager Nick Caserio and head coach DeMeco Ryans apparently felt the same, considering the latest news.

NFL insider Aaron Wilson is reporting that the Texans have reached an agreement with veteran free agent cornerback Shaquill Griffin.

Wilson reports the deal to be for one year, $3M guaranteed. With escalators and incentives, the deal can be worth up to $4.5M.

Griffin signed a three-year, $44.5M deal with the Jaguars in 2021 after four seasons with the Seattle Seahawks. Griffin was released by the Jaguars back in March after being limited to five games in 2022.

Before 2022, injuries had not been an issue for Griffin, as the corner had never played in less than 12 games in a season. In 2021, the corner's last healthy season, he had a solid 72.0 PFF grade with 49 tackles and seven passes defended.

Griffin's most efficient season came in 2019 when the corner collected 65 tackles and 13 pass defenses.

The former Seahawk and Jaguar provides the Texans with much-needed depth to a young secondary. Derek Stingley Jr. is locked into one starting spot, while either Steven Nelson or the new addition Griffin should start on the opposite side. Desmond King II looks primed to be the nickel once again.

Even if Griffin does not start, he should see plenty of snaps. This move is a nice low-risk flier for the Texans and could provide great value if Griffin plays to his Pro Bowl level.
