Sean Payton is the Broncos' new head coach after Nathaniel Hackett, the first-time head coach, said all the right things, but did all the wrong things in terms of coaching. The Broncos were on to another coaching search and this time it was a guy who had won a Super Bowl before.
Because of his pedigree, most people listen to Payton, and most people agree with or understand what he says. He is a guy that will do things his way. He is a guy that knows how to establish a winning culture, and while that starts in free agency and the draft, it carries over to the rookie minicamp.
He said he would keep things on the down low when it came to media this offseason, but he still talked to the media on Saturday. During his presser, he said one thing that stood out a little more than everything else – what scares him about rookie camp.
"We talk about this all the time as coaches, for me, my biggest fear is that somebody that's out here for three days ends up somewhere else playing well," Payton said to the media. "And so trying to look at everyone, not just the draft picks, but the guys that are here for three days and, and that's the challenge sometimes because, you know, we're not in pads.
"You know, in the first meeting we're showing them Adam Thielen was not a signed undrafted free agent, he was a three-day tryout player. Our leagues had a number of those players. And so really trying to look at every one of these guys evaluate them properly, with an open mind that history would tell us that, you know, there's, there are players that get overlooked and, and it's not a science."
This is something that honestly happens all the time. They can't sign every guy, and in fact, can only sign 53 players to the active game-day roster when the regular season gets here. Sure, the guys they still like they can put on the practice squad, but that's still free game for other teams as well.
It could happen this year, as the Broncos did their homework on every rookie, undrafted or not, and brought in some amazing talent. They will have to let some really good players go.
