Geno Smith saying and doing the right things throughout Seahawks' offseason
Pete Carroll believes the Seattle Seahawks are in good hands with Geno Smith.
Geno Smith is attempting to become a quarterback not defined by his career 2022 NFL season.
After leading the Seahawks to a 9-8 and a playoff berth, Smith is attempting to build on a season where he posted career highs in wins (nine), passing yards (4,282), touchdowns (30), and QBR (60.8).
And to this point in the NFL offseason, Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll is more than ecstatic about what Smith is and can be at the quarterback position moving forward.
"He's handled everything so well," Carroll said of Geno Smith on NFL Network. "He's such a great leader. He emerged so quickly on the scene and took hold of it, and had a great season. But more than all of that, it's just his outlook and his perspective that he brings to this team this year now. Man, he's on fire. He's done everything he could possibly do in the offseason, sending the right message, working like crazy, in great shape, and really taking hold of this opportunity.
"We know we are in good hands with G [Smith]."
Last season, Seattle was the ninth-best offense in the NFL. That was with D.K. Metcalf and Tyler Lockett serving as the primary pass-catchers. Through the draft, Seattle added Jaxon Smith-Njigba, a wide receiver out of Ohio State, who is comfortable and confident in his abilities as an elite pass-catcher at the NFL level.
Seattle also added UCLA running back Zach Charbonnet to pair with Keneth Walker II in the backfield. In short, Smith won't be lacking offensive weapons around him in the 2023 season.
So, Carroll's confidence in Smith comes as no surprise. The team doubled down in their belief in the quarterback, not selecting a top quarterback early in the draft a month removed from giving Smith a contract extension. Now, Seattle wants to see just how far a former journeyman quarterback can take the team.
