The New Orleans Saints added some necessary depth at wide receiver this week. They signed veteran WR James Washington to a one-year deal. Accordingly, the roster competition at the position heats up.
Three players are locked into a spot. Chris Olave, Michael Thomas, and Rashid Shaheed will all make the team. That leaves A.T. Perry, Tre'Quan Smith, Bryan Edwards, and Washington as four other options to fill out depth. Not to mention, the Saints have some UDFA options in the building as of now as well.
There are a lot of bodies that will try to lock down a depth role in the offense and on special teams.
Washington proved that he can be a capable receiver at the NFL level during his time in Pittsburgh. He was a deep threat, but drops were an issue at times. He missed last season in Dallas with injury. Washington is fully healthy now.
Tre'Quan Smith is certainly on the bubble as a veteran for the Saints. Smith has not had requisite receiving production over the past couple of seasons. 2020 was his most impressive receiving year, and he totaled just over 400 yards. Last season, Smith totaled just 19 receptions.
He's struggled, and it could be the end of the road for him in New Orleans. After adding Washington, the depth is quite crowded. Tough decisions will have to be made, and Smith could be on the chopping block by the start of the season.
