The New England Patriots didn’t make any splashy moves to upgrade their offensive line this offseason, but the unit will have a new starter in 2023.
Where that player will slot in still remains a mystery Tuesday after free-agent addition Riley Reiff spoke to reporters at Gillette Stadium.
Reiff, who has been in the league since the Detroit Lions selected him in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft, signed a one-year, $5 million contract with the Patriots this offseason. Reiff primarily played left tackle for seven of his first nine years in the NFL. He’s only started at right tackle over the last two years, however. The Patriots have another tackle on their roster with positional versatility in Trent Brown, who has started seasons at left and right tackle with New England. Brown was New England's left tackle in 2022.
“I’m just an offensive lineman,” Reiff said Tuesday. “Whatever the coaches want me to do, I’ll do it.”
Cole Strange, the Patriots’ 2022 first-round pick, will almost certainly be at left guard. David Andrews is the Patriots’ long-time starting center, and Michael Onwenu has settled into right guard. That leaves Brown and Reiff as the projected tackles. It seems most likely that Brown will play left tackle and Reiff will stay at right tackle, but ultimately it’s a decision new offensive line coach Adrian Klemm will need to make.
The Patriots do have other options to play tackle, including Onwenu, who has a history on the right side, free-agent pickup Calvin Anderson, Conor McDermott, Andrew Stueber and rookie fourth-round pick Sidy Sow.
Reporters will get their first glimpse at an open Patriots practice next Thursday. New England's plans for their offensive line will become more obvious at that time.
