Seattle Seahawks star receiver D.K. Metcalf has one goal heading into 2023, participating in a Gatorade Shower.
Metcalf, often described as a freak of nature, has yet to participate in the known football tradition, mainly because he hasn't been on the winning side of drastically important games. But don't take my word for it, take his.
"I never won a game we did. I was in high school. Lost the state championship three times," Metcalf said to Yahoo Sports at the Gatorade National Player of the Year awards. "College, we were average, 6 and 6, 5 and 7 (wins). Then in the League, we really haven't made a Gatorade shower appearance."
In essence, what Metcalf is admitting to is never playing in a championship game and winning.
Throughout the offseason, Metcalf has made it known that he plans to do things a little differently in 2023.
Though the Seahawks played well in 2022, making the NFL Playoffs and playing in the Wild Card Round as starting quarterback Geno Smith burst onto the scene, it wasn't Metcalf's best season individually.
During mandatory minicamp, Metcalf chalked it up to him forcing the issue a bit too much. Instead of leading by example in 2022, he was leading by voice, something he said may have gotten out of hand during the season.
“I’m a guy that works hard and leads by example," Metcalf said in June. “I overstepped some boundaries [last year], where if I was just going to lead by example those boundaries are never touched."
Part of getting to that coveted Gatorade shower for Metcalf is being the best version of himself he can be. With Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Tyler Lockett, a running back room that has a stable of workhorses, and continuity with the starting quarterback, Smith may get to his Gatorade shower sooner than later.
But still, that may be a bold proclamation for a Seahawks team that is the epitome of playing with house money. We'll see if it holds.
D.K. Metcalf letting Geno Smith lead, stepping back into a more natural role
The Seattle Seahawks star wide receiver knows talk is cheap. Success comes down to leading by example.
