The Lions should consider bringing in Denzel Mims

The Lions receiving corps is a bit weird. On one hand, they have reliable guys like Amon-Ra St. Brown, Kalif Raymond and Marvin Jones. On the other hand, they have a lot of questions like is Jameson Williams for real? Who's going to be on this team next year? Is there a clear cut number two receiver on this team right now? This move probably wouldn't help with that last one, but it's worth looking at for other reasons.

Mims could be an interesting target for the Lions if he winds up not getting picked up on the waiver wire or traded. Mims can bring something to the team that they need. A 6-foot-3-inch receiver with a big frame, blazing speed and elite jumping ability. The Lions just don't have guys that are able to do that at Mims size. There's another reason why I think the Lions might be interested though.

Back in 2020 when Mims was coming out for the draft, the Los Angeles Rams were very interested in drafting Mims.

The Director of College Scouting during that time was none other than Lions General Manager Brad Holmes. He clearly must have seen something in Mims at the time. The Rams met with Mims several times, but they wound up going with Cam Akers instead. There's a million reasons as to why that happened. Todd Gurley's release was probably the biggest one.

Things did not work out for Mims in New York. The player and the team did not seem to mesh together well at all. Last season Mims asked to be traded after it became clear to him that he was not going to have  future with the Jets. The Jets also drafted Garrett Wilson and Wilson is simply a better receiver than Mims.

The reason why it would work out in Detroit is because the Lions have a lot more stability than the Jets do. Everyone wants to crown the Jets, but that team is a bad season away from changing just about everything.

In Detroit Mims would have Jared Goff over Mike White and Zach Wilson, he's have a good head coach in Dan Campbell and he's have a solid receiving coach in former NFL receiver Antwan Randle-El. That's more than enough to help Mims get closer to being the player most thought he would be when he was coming out from Baylor.

He would have to do the work though. Any team that's going to be bringing in Mims is going to want to see that he can play the NFL game better than he did in New York before they do anything else. Mims would not be guaranteed a spot in Detroit.

If Brad Holmes liked what he saw at Baylor and thinks he can get something out of him, I say go for it.
