The New York Giants have to be more productive in the secondary in 2023.
Two positions that need to take the next step are slot or nickel corner, and strong safety.
So with that in mind, today we're going to highlight the battles occurring at those positions, with one starter potentially on his way out the door:
Giants Training Camp Battle: Defense
Slot-Nickel CB: Darnay Holmes vs Cordale Flott:

Holmes is still spry at only 25, but he has been inconsistent during his tenure in New York and unlike Flott, he carries a cap hit of nearly $3 million dollars in 2023. That’s something that could be used as leverage against him when it comes time to trim the roster.
Flott is only approaching his second year in the league, but the 22-year-old showed promise in the reps he had on defense last season. Seeing as he was brought in by the new regime, has less tread on his tires, and would save nearly $1.75 million in cap space, Flott may earn the starting role if he has a strong camp.
Strong Safety: Dane Belton Vs. Bobby McCain

Belton wasn’t known for being a ball-hawk when coming out of Iowa, as he is more of a traditional box safety. That may hurt him when comparing him to his competition, but if Belton proves to have added range to his game during camp, he may come out on top.
McCain was brought in this offseason to compete with Belton for the starting position. He has both experience and ball production on his side, something that evades Belton's skillset. So although McCain is longer in the tooth and wasn't drafted by New York, he may be their best bet in 2023 given his track record.
New York has no choice but to improve on the backend this season. Another year of only six interceptions is not only intolerable, but it's also downright hard to do when your defensive coordinator is Don "Wink" Martindale. But in order to ensure he can run more of the exotic blitzes and coverage concepts he likes to employ, he first has to trust in his personnel. That's what makes these battles so intriguing, with the first glimpses coming in just five days' time.
