The obvious goals for preseason are picking the team, conditioning and getting into game form. Beyond that, what are the 3 most important goals the Patriots need to address this preseason?

The Patriots have made a lot of changes during the offseason and that leaves a lot of questions. Here are the three that need to be answered before the season starts:

1. Finding Mac Jones' top receiver

Jones needs to establish a strong connection with his receiving group including finding the person he will consistently go to. While the Patriots didn't get DeAndre Hopkins, I think people are looking passed their receiving group, which does have a lot of promise. Training camp is going to be important for these receivers to establish themselves and further their connection with Jones.

2. Replacing Devin McCourty

It's clear that no one will replace McCourty's leadership, having been on the team for 13 seasons. However, they do need someone who can step into that spot and help fill the void that he has left on the defense. Kyle Dugger and Adrian Phillips are being viewed as top candidates to fill his role.

3. Mac Jones getting back on track

It comes as no surprise when I say that Jones took a serious step back last season. He had a promising rookie season where he was the NFL’s top rookie quarterback in 2021 under the direction of former offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels and finished with 352 completions for 3,801 yards and 22 touchdowns.

However, with McDaniels leaving to become head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders in 2022 and Patricia becoming the main play caller for the Patriots, Jones took a serious step back. He appeared in 14 games, having to sit out due to injury, and threw for 2,997 yards (288 completions) and 14 touchdowns.

He wants to put last year behind him and get back to where he was during his rookie season, while also showing consistent growth.

Which will happen first: A fight between a Patriot and a member of an opposing team from joint practices (and which team?), or a fight amongst two Patriots?

This one is easy: a fight amongst two Patriots.

The team has already had one scuffle during OTAs, with Cole Strange and Anfernee Jennings going at it during an 11-on-11 period. These guys are competitors and can get caught up in the moment, but at the end of the day they are teammates.

Do you believe Joe Judge’s new role as assistant head coach can have a positive impact?

The duo of Joe Judge and Matt Patricia last season was a clear failure. And while Patricia chose to leave at the end of last season, Judge stayed on. However, it was clear that Judge's role was not going to be the same, with the Patriots having brought in Bill O'Brien as the offensive coordinator.

During OTAs, Belichick said that Judge would "do whatever I ask him to do," and that it "might change from time to time." I think Judge is still a good asset to the coaching staff, having a lot of NFL experience, and this new role will allow him to work with the different coaches and have a hand in different areas rather than focusing and being in charge of just one.

Do you think we sign Fournette or Cook?

I don't know if the Patriots will sign Leonard Fournette or Dalvin Cook, but I will be surprised if they don't bring in at least one veteran running back. Rhamondre Stevenson has proven himself, but a little help can't hurt. I think out of the two, the Patriots are more likely to sign Fournette, having shown interest in the running back last year. But, they also brought in Darrell Henderson for a work out, so New England is looking to find the best fit.

Who among the three will be part of practice squad: Tre Nixon, Demario Douglas, and Kayshon Boutte?

Since being drafted by the Patriots in 2021, Tre Nixon has spent his time on the practice squad, but this season Nixon is looking to earn that roster spot. Yet, he has some tough competition. Both Kayshon Boutte and Demario Douglas were drafted by the Patriots in the sixth round of the 2023 Draft. I think that the battle is going to come down to the two rookies, with Boutte and Douglas having to show that they can adapt to the faster pace of the NFL and can truly bring another level to the offense.

This week there were many rumors about the pressure they have. How true is the rumor of a possible dismissal of Bill for January?

Robert Kraft has made his goals for the 2023 season simple: playoffs. While there was sure to be some struggles after Tom Brady left, Kraft wants to see improvement rather than decline, and last season certainly did not highlight Belichick's best decisions. Bringing in Bill O'Brien is a step in the right direction, but Kraft along with the rest of the fanbase want to get back in the win column.

With rumors of Belichick being "on the hot seat," if things don't go well this season, how bad would the team have to be before Mr. Kraft takes action and fires Bill as GM, coach, or both

I think the pressure is on Belichick for the season, but I don't think a dismissal is imminent unless the decline takes an even steeper turn.

What is our running back depth and who is our true WR1?

Behind Rhamondre Stevenson, the Patriots have Ty Montgomery, Kevin Harris, and Pierre Strong. Stevenson had a breakout season and with Damien Harris leaving to go to the Buffalo Bills, he takes over on the top of the depth chart. The other three are entering their second year and are looking to earn a spot behind Stevenson.

Do y'all think we will make the playoffs and actually win a playoff game?

The AFC East is a tough division and the Patriots have their work cut out for them, but I don't think people should be shrugging off a potential playoff appearance. It's clear that New England is the underdogs in the division, but that just means that have more to prove. If they take some of the frustration from last season combined with the lack of public confidence in the team heading into this season, that motivation could translate to success on the field. It's hard to truly know how the team will look, but they do have the skills to at least make a competitive run for a playoff spot.

Is the Brady era of winning Super Bowls over for a while? It seems as though the team isn’t truly focused.

No one is ever going to truly replace Tom Brady. He helped lead the Patriots to six Super Bowl championships and was a key part of the offense for 20 seasons. New England is looking to rebuild and find its identity without the future Hall of Fame quarterback, which probably means a Super Bowl isn't coming in the next few years.

But you also never know what can happen in the NFL.

Who's the nicest Patriots player you’ve had an interaction with?

For this one I have to say Matthew Slater just because he is always very attentive to the questions the reporters are asking and gives very thoughtful responses.

We did not see many snaps on offense last season from Pierre Strong and Kevin Harris. Do we think they will be the main backups behind Stevenson or are the Patriots primarily interested in bringing in a Leonard Fournette or Darnell Henderson to bump one of the second year RBs off the roster?

Based on the way the Patriots have conducted themselves in recent days, it seems they are mainly looking to bring in a veteran running back. Strong appeared in 15 games last season, with 10 carries for 100 yards and one touchdown. As for Kevin Harris, he started the year on the practice squad before being moved to the active roster. He appeared in five games with 18 carries for 52 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown.

Strong and Kevin Harris are both entering their second year, but losing Damian Harris meant they lost the experience he had.

We always get so much negativity around the Patriots lately. I am actually very positive and optimistic about the upcoming year. I think the team is being under sold and disrespected. Can you guys turn the normally doom and gloom narrative, and actually give us some legitimate reason to look forward to the team this year and where things are headed?

I happen to agree with this question. I think people are overlooking the Patriots this season and not taking into account the changes they have made. While losing DeAndre Hopkins was a major hit, New England still brought in Bill O'Brien to lead the offense. Obviously things will become more clear in the coming days with training camp starting up, but I think the Patriots could surprise many this season.

What’s an under the radar trade candidate the pats could get to help them?

Honestly this question stumped me a bit. I tried to think of someone for a while, but no one came to mind and I think that's because it's just a little too early to know that yet. The Patriots have both new faces and returning faces, so first it's important to see how they play together before deciding if someone needs to be traded and/or brought in. The only position would potentially be at running back, but at the same time there are plenty of free agents available.

Is the D-Line going to be any good? Can you explain why or why not?

The defensive line has all the pieces to succeed and be dominant this season. Christian Barmore, Davon Godchaux, Deatrich Wise, and Lawrence Guy should be locks on the roster. Godchaux has appeared in every game since coming to New England and his leadership will be key. Wise is coming off a career season, recording 54 total tackles and 7.5 sacks in 2022. And as long as the contract disputes can get straightened out, Lawrence Guy has 13 years of experience, having played with the Patriots for the last six seasons. Lastly, New England has Barmore, who is coming into his third season. After a strong rookie year in 2021, he was forced to sit out for some of last season due to injury. But, he's looking to get back to where he was before.

Recent reports state that the Patriot's rigorous training methods played a hand in Julian Edelman's retirement: “I swear if I didn’t play in New England I’d still be playing because we practiced so goddamn hard." Your thoughts on this and how does this define Patriot's culture?

While the Patriots always aim to practice hard, I think part of that is on Edelman. When appearing on the New Heights podcast hosted by Travis and Jason Kelce, the brothers applauded him for how he always left everything on the field. Edelman made catches that seemed uncatchable (remember the miracle catch in Super Bowl LI against the Atlanta Falcons?), so I think it was in him to just give his all and play hard regardless of the situation. But that's partly brought on by the Patriots culture too.
