One storyline that has mostly gone under the radar this offseason is the Tennessee Vols entering the 2023 season with a new offensive coordinator.

Alex Golesh, who served as Tennessee's tight ends coach/offensive coordinator for the first two years of the Josh Heupel era, left before UT's bowl game last year to become the new head coach at USF.

Golesh was also Heupel's offensive coordinator at UCF in 2020, which means Heupel will have a new offensive coordinator for the first time in four years this fall.

The loss of Golesh and promotion of quarterbacks coach Joey Halzle to offensive coordinator has gone under the radar mostly because Heupel is the mastermind behind Tennessee's high-powered offense.

Golesh, however, was a key part of Tennessee's success in 2022. Heupel put a lot of trust Golesh and that trust led to a lot of success for the Vols last season.

So how will having a new offensive coordinator impact starting quarterback Joe Milton and the Vols' offense in 2023?

Well, according to Milton it won't have any impact.

“Nope. It’s Coach Heupel’s offense,” said Milton at SEC Media Days on Thursday. “So whatever he wants, it’s gonna get done that way. I don’t see it no different being a change of offensive coordinators. Coach (Halzle), he’s just a dude."

“And he got the guys in the quarterback room with us," added Milton. "Mitch (Militello) and you know, Phillip (Lund), you know, those guys in the room with us and they were willing to help no matter what. So just being able to be on those three guys every day is a blessing.”

It sounds like Milton isn't expecting Tennessee's offensive play calling to miss a beat with Golesh no longer in the booth.

Of course, the continuity on Tennessee's staff helps. Halzle was right in the thick of the Vols' offensive play calling process last season. And Halzle has been with Heupel since his playing days at Oklahoma. So it should certainly be a seamless transition at offensive coordinator for the Vols this fall.
