The Indianapolis Colts have been hit with some unfortunate news as the team transitions from OTAs into minicamp this offseason. One of the members of the Colts' rookie class will not be contributing this fall.
ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter reported on Wednesday that fifth-round NFL Draft selection Daniel Scott suffered a torn ACL on the final play of OTAs. He has since been placed on IR, effectively ending his first NFL season before it ever got started.
Scott was one of the Colts' handful of day-three draft selections this past April. A safety out of Cal, he was drafted in hopes of carving out a role in the defensive backfield in addition to playing special teams.
The rookie had been generating some hype early in the offseason. He was a team captain on the collegiate level and even logged over 600 snaps on special teams prior to being selected by Indianapolis.
He was expected to make an immediate impact in a similar role once the regular season rolled around. Unfortunately, the season-ending knee injury means that the Colts will have to wait for the fifth-rounder to see the field.
Indianapolis had already been hit in the defensive backfield this offseason when it was revealed that starting cornerback Isaiah Rodgers had been violating the NFL's gambling policy. The Colts also traded away Stephon Gilmore.
Scott's injury is the latest development in the Colts revamping its defensive backfield. Fortunately, the Colts spent premium resources in the secondary through the draft, highlighted by fellow rookies Julius Brents and Darius Rush.
