Shortly after the conclusion of the NFL draft, the Raiders met with former All-Pro cornerback Marcus Peters with the hopes of working out a deal. Almost one month later, Peters remains a free agent.
The Raiders have signed a couple of low-cost veteran corners this offseason, but none are expected to make a significant impact. While they have some young talent at the position, they lost their most experienced corner when Rock Ya-Sin signed with the Ravens earlier this offseason. They also waited until day three of the 2023 draft before addressing the cornerback position.
All of this added up, means they need to make a move at cornerback before the season kicks off. That move is starting to become clear.
According to The Athletic, it now "seems likely" that Peters will sign with the Raiders before training camp begins.
Those guys may be competing for one starting job, as the Raiders seem likely to sign veteran cornerback Marcus Peters before training camp. Peters came in for a visit last month and, according to league and team sources, the two sides have stayed in touch as Peters tests the market. The Raiders have other veteran cornerbacks on their list, but Peters could very likely sign with the team that he grew up rooting for as a kid in Oakland.
While Peters would be a relatively short-term fix at the position, he would provide an immediate upgrade to the Raiders' secondary. Peters started in all 13 games he appeared in for the Ravens last season, registering 47 tackles, two forced fumbles, a sack, and an interception. Peters is 30 years old and is a 2x first-team All-Pro, 2x second-team All-Pro, and a 3x Pro Bowler. His last Pro Bowl season was in 2019.
With the NFL season quickly approaching, signing Peters feels inevitable. He can hold down the cornerback position until one of the Raiders' young corners are ready to step in.
