Bears OC Luke Getsy is getting crazy and it can help the team win in 2023

There's a lot to love about the 2023 version of the Chicago Bears offense and it's not just because Justin Fields and co. set a low bar in 2022.

The Bears used the offseason to add a ton of talent to the offensive side of the ball and the current result is a roster that looks completely different than the one that existed at this time last year.

But, it's not all about the players. There's one coach from last year that people should be excited about: offensive coordinator Luke Getsy.

Getsy showed last year, even with a bad roster, that he can run an offense. His ultimate vision of the offense and its effectiveness flashed throughout the season. Sure, the flashes were inconsistent, but what would one expect considering last year's circumstances? Said inconsistency certainly doesn't erase the overall point that Getsy's scheme can succeed in the NFL.

Hell, it's mostly the same scheme that helped Aaron Rodgers win back-to-back MVPs, but Getsy didn't get a hold of Rodgers until the future Hall-of-Famer was 36-years-old. Rodgers obviously still had plenty of gas in the tank, but he didn't have anywhere near the athleticism nor running prowess that the 24-year-old Fields currently has.

Getsy knows, this too. And according to Robert Tonyan, the Bears' second-year OC is getting pretty wild in his approach to building the offense.

"Luke gets, you know, a little crazy with the creativity, and that's why we love him," Tonyan told reporters Thursday. "… It's very versatile. Personnel-wise, you can put anyone in there and run the same exact plays [through] different looks and the same formations, or a bunch of motions, or whatever it is.

"I think that's [what makes] a good offense – is a lot of smoke and mirrors to get what you want accomplished. I'm just really excited to kind of be a part of the creativity that Luke has brought."

It's not just Fields that factors into all of this, though. As mentioned earlier, the entire offense has been revamped. From the offensive line to the receivers – everything is better.

And naturally, that has Getsy working harder than ever to get this offense to where it needs to be. The players are noticing and buying in, too, which should lead to good things down the road.

"He's really in there grinding to [help] us win games and make us better," said Tonyan.
"[He] genuinely loves, like, the men in this locker room, as well as all the coaches. They're trying to get to know you and they care about you. And I think that's the biggest thing is building trust before you can just go in there and just start, you know, coaching and telling people what to do."
