The Dalvin Cook era in Minnesota is coming to an end within a matter of hours, according to NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero.
Pelissero reports that the Vikings are expected to release the four-time Pro Bowler in a move that would save the team $9 million in salary cap space. However, there is still a slim chance the Vikings could make a last-ditch effort to trade Cook prior to Friday.
It’s been no secret that Cook has been on Minnesota’s trading block for the majority of the offseason. Coming off of a year in which he rushed for 1,173 yards and eight touchdowns on 264 carries, Cook still has some gas left in the tank.
Unfortunately, Cook appears to be falling victim to the NFL’s negative perception of aging running backs as he is approaching his 28th birthday in August.
Many believe the Miami Dolphins to be one Cook’s top suitors. Cook grew up in the Miami area and he certainly would be an automatic upgrade at the running back position. He likely slots in as the starter in Miami, joining a group consisting of Raheem Mostert, Jeff Wilson Jr., Myles Gaskin and rookie Devon Achane.
Plus, Cook did post a picture of himself in Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium on Thursday afternoon, which could indicate his preferred destination.
The Vikings are well-prepared for life without Cook. The team inked Alexander Mattison this offseason who has been one of the league’s top backups over the last few seasons. Behind Mattison are Ty Chandler, Kene Nwangwu and intriguing rookie DeWayne McBride, who led the FBS in rushing in 2022.
