Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Alec Pierce flashed during his rookie season and is considered one of the promising players on the team's roster. However, the young pass catcher has not participated all the way through OTAs.
Pierce did not practice on the final day of OTAs this week, raising a bit of concern. Nothing too alarming since these practices are voluntary. But any absence is at least a little bit notable.
Fortunately, it does not sound like the Colts are all too concerned about the situation. Indianapolis first-year head coach Shane Steichen provided a bit of an update on Pierce to the media.
Steichen revealed that Pierce has been dealing with a foot injury that kept him out of practices. In fact, Steichen explained that Pierce likely could have suited up. But there's no point in risking anything with months still to go until the regular season.
“He’s got a little foot (injury). It’s nothing serious," Steichen explained when updating Pierce's status. "He could’ve practiced today. We were just resting him. He’s got a little foot. It’s nothing serious. He could’ve practiced today. We were just resting him."
The Colts obviously want Pierce to be fully healthy and ready to go when the season kicks off in September. He emerged as a legitimate threat in the offense as a rookie and looks to be the second option in the passing game behind Michael Pittman Jr.
During his initial season in the NFL, the former Cincinnati pass catcher turned 41 receptions into nearly 600 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He figures to be an important part of the offense for Steichen in year one.
