There aren't many wide receivers who have left as big of a mark as former Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson did in his nine-year Hall of Fame career.
Though Johnson can't help the Lions on the field any longer, he is going out of his way to make an impact on Jameson Williams.
Johnson joined 97.1 The Ticket to detail his relationship with Detroit's 2022 first-round pick.
“I connected with Jamo (Williams) yesterday really for the first time, and I look forward to being around and being a shoulder for him to lean on,” Johnson said to 97.1. “Extremely talented kid. We saw him when he touched the field last year for the first time. So I look forward to just helping him just build a level of consistency and being the pro that he wants to be. Anything I can do to help him, I’ll do that. I’ll be there.”
Williams has just one reception to his name after coming off a terrifying ACL injury at Alabama. But that one catch, which was a 41-yard touchdown grab, inspired hope within the fanbase that Williams could be a Pro Bowl caliber player for years to come.
Unfortunately Williams will have to wait until year three to log his first complete season in Detroit. That is due to his six-game suspension he will serve at the start of the 2023 season for violating the league's gambling policy.
With that being said, Williams absolutely elevates the Lions' passing game just by being on the field. If he can stay available and heed some of Johnson's advice, there is no reason why Williams can't break out in the upcoming season.
