The Chicago Bears haven’t had a glamorous history at the quarterback position. While that might be the understatement of the century, one legendary Bears signal caller was recently named to an exclusive list full of all-time greats.

Sid Luckman was ahead of his time. Luckman quarterbacked the Bears from 1939-1950 leading Chicago to four NFL championships while earning five All-Pro nods in his Hall of Fame career.

Though Luckman’s greatness wasn’t witnessed by many, as it took place so long ago, Super Bowl champion head coach Marty Mornhinweg is making his legacy is kept alive.

Mornhinweg was considered to be one of the best offensive minds in football during his 18-year coaching career spanning from the late 90s all the way up to 2018. Mornhinweg has forgotten more football than most people will ever learn.

In his most recent article featured on 33rd Team, he laid out his list of the best quarterbacks to ever line up under center. Luckman checked in T-4 with other old timers, Otto Graham and Sammy Baugh.

From Mornhinweg: “Sid Luckman, meanwhile, is known for throwing seven touchdown passes in one game — on Nov. 14, 1943, long before the NFL’s passing revolution. He added four NFL championships and an MVP before he hung up the cleats.”

The Bears have a remarkable amount of history as one of the NFL’s original eight teams. Though recent decades haven’t been kind to the fan base, players like Luckman laid the foundation.

It’s nice to see another Bears great crack a list full of some of the game’s greatest players. The next time an opposing fan throws shade at Chicago’s history at the quarterback position, make sure to remind them that it was Luckman who revolutionized the position as one of the best to ever do it.
