The Kansas City Chiefs finally got Joe Burrow to say what everyone knows. He finally admitted that Patrick Mahomes is the best quarterback in the league. He was modest and humble, but it still felt great to hear.
In all seriousness, though, Burrow is also the real deal. Even if Chiefs fans don't want to admit it, there is a reason he is one of only two quarterbacks to beat Mahomes three times; the other is Tom Brady.
Burrow is a guy that will win an MVP one day, or maybe even this upcoming season. He will likely take his team to another Super Bowl because he is that talented. But, at the same time, it sounds like he knows: There are levels to this, and he just isn't there yet.
"I don't think there is any argument right now; it's Pat [Mahomes]," Burrow told the media on Tuesday. "Until someone has a better year than he's had, he's the one to knock off."
Mahomes, in just seven seasons, has two Super Bowl MVPs, two MVPs, and has never not made the AFC Championship game, with three AFC Championships. When you talk talent-wise, Burrow is near the top of the league. I wouldn't say he is more talented than Mahomes, but it's closer than the gap between Mahomes and Josh Allen.
However, Mahomes has done enough in seven years that he could retire today and be a Hall of Famer. He is already being compared to Tom Brady, which says enough about him in itself. Burrow is very, very good, and the reason the Bengals are no longer a team that is an "easy W."
But, for Burrow to recognize that says a lot, especially with the rivalry the two teams have. That doesn't mean they still won't hate each other while on the field.
