The Denver Broncos missed a lot from one of their best defenders last year as he was injured, but one media outlet expects big things, as they ranked him ahead of some impressive names.
When the Broncos signed edge rusher Randy Gregory, they hoped to get a guy who would provide close to elite production. Not quite there, but a guy who could come in and get the job done consistently.
Then, he struggled with injuries all year. Gregory only played six games, which could be better for a guy you are paying a five-year, $70 million contract to. But, when Gregory did play, he was very, very good.
Gregory finished his 2022 campaign with a Pro Football Focus pass rush grade of 76.2. His overall grade was 76.9. In 114 total pass rush snaps, he generated 20 total pressures, which is very good. Before getting hurt, Gregory had a career-best 17.5% pass rush win percentage.
Gregory was so well last season when he was on the field; one PFF analyst featured him on his "EDGE tier" list, and Gregory was put in a tier above some pretty good names and in the same tier as such good players too.
Trevor Sikkema of PFF ranked Demarcus Lawrence, Shaquil Barrett, John Franklin-Myers, Aidan Hutchinson, Josh Uche, Denico Autry, and Chase Young all in the same tier as Gregory. He called it tier four, above tier five, which featured guys like Cam Jordan, Josh Sweat, Brandon Graham, Sam Hubbard, Alex Highsmith, and Greg Rousseau.
Gregory could have done some really special things last year had he not gotten hurt. If he was healthy, you could put him a few tiers above. The Broncos missed out on some potentially elite play in 2022. They hope he can sustain that for 17 games in 2023.
Who’s to blame for the Randy Gregory debacle?
It was all smiles and hugs on Tuesday morning in North Texas after the Dallas Cowboys and Randy Gregory agreed to a five-year, $70 million deal with $28 million in guarantees. Just a day after the Cowboys signed DeMarcus Lawrence to a three-year deal, it appeared that they secured both starting defensive ends going forward. […]
