The 2023 NFL Draft and free agency may be behind us, but there are still opportunities for teams to add talent. One such way is the NFL Supplemental Draft, which is returning in 2023 for the first time since 2019.
The Supplemental Draft is an opportunity for players deemed inelgible for the NFL Draft to have an opportunity to be selected. If a team selects a player in the Supplemental Draft, they forfeit a draft pick in that round of next year's NFL Draft.
Two notable players have entered their hats into the ring for this edition, and the Texans could be interested.
So far, wide receivers Malachi Wideman and Milton Wright have been deemed eligible for the draft.
Wideman originally signed on with the Tennessee Volunteers as a four-star WR. The speedster transferred after the 2020 season when Tennessee's coaching staff was fired. Wideman went on to play for the Jackson State Tigers and collected 34 catches for 540 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2021.
Unfortunately, Wideman would not build on that successful campaign in 2022, and instead was ruled ineligible to play.
Wright had a similar story. In 2021, Wright was the leading receiver for the Purdue Boilermakers, finishing with 57 catches for 732 yards and seven touchdowns. Like Wideman, Wright would miss the 2022 season after being ruled ineligible.
Most would agree that the Texans do not have a bonafide No. 1 receiver on the roster currently. The receiver room is better than it was a year ago, but there are snaps to be had. Would the Texans give up a mid-round pick in next year's draft for a shot at one of these receivers?
It is worth noting that the Texans have made two such selections in the past. In the 2002 Supplemental Draft, the Texans selected guard Milford Brown in the sixth round. The following season, the team selected running back Tony Hollings in the second round.
Other notable supplementary selections include Josh Gordon, Bernie Kosar, and Ahmad Brooks, showing that there is talent to be had in these drafts.
