Packers are good fit for NFC North rival that's on track to get cut
The Green Bay Packers have a very young receiver room, but it's also a very talented one. It's easy to see the plan that Matt LaFleur, Jason Vrabel and co. have for the wideouts. It's easy to see the plan that Matt LaFleur, Jason Vrabel and co. have for the wideouts. Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs are obviously the first two options and after them it's Samori Toure, last year's seventh-rounder, along with multiple rookies and other players who have mostly been practice squad guys throughout their careers.
Did I mention it's also a very inexperienced receiver room?
Sure, Watson and Doubs played a ton of snaps last year – they're not your typical second-year players because of that. But it would not be good if one of them were to go down for an extended period of time. Another guy can always step up and fill the void, but that's nowhere near guaranteed when look at the WR room in Green Bay.
Adding a veteran option before training camp wouldn't be a bad idea. The problem is there aren't many options out there. Plus, unless the player has had experience in a LaFleur-like offense, there will be a steep learning curve since said player missed all of the Packers' offseason program.
That's why a guy like Chicago Bears wideout Dante Pettis makes a lot of sense to keep an eye on. Yes, he's currently on the Bears, but early impressions are he won't make the 53-man roster after having his best year since 2018 – his rookie year.
Final cuts aren't until August 29, but the key with Pettis is he'll have two offseasons in Luke Getsy's offense under his belt, at that point. Obviously, Getsy runs the same offense that LaFleur runs. With adjustments of course.
There wouldn't be an "acclimation period" for Pettis if Green Bay were to snatch him up. Plus, he has inside/outside versatility, he's a willing blocker in the run game, and he can play special teams. He wouldn't really take any playing time from the younger guys and he can help them learn the offense since he's had experience in Getsy's scheme.
The idea is certainly a long-term plan, but NFL GMs and teams always have one eye on the future. Pettis can easily be a sensible -and effective- part of that future, too.
Luke Musgrave can do something no Packers rookie has ever done
This almost seems like a lock for the Packers’ 42nd pick of the 2023 NFL Draft.
