Seattle Seahawks cornerback Mike Jackson went into offseason workouts unsure about his spot on the team.
The Seahawks drafted Devon Witherspoon with the No. 5 pick in the NFL draft, and it was widely believed that Jackson would now be relegated to the bench.
Until he started impressing during team workouts. Yet, in a recent article on ESPN, Jackson was named a "surprise offseason standout" for the Seahawks, as Brady Henderson theorized that Jackson could be the No. 3 corner heading into the 2023 NFL season.
Take a look at what ESPN had to say:
"After a solid showing as a first-year starter in 2022, Jackson seemed destined for a backup role when the Seahawks spent the No. 5 overall pick on Witherspoon," Henderson writes. "He's making a strong case to remain a regular on defense, however, perhaps as the third corner. With Tariq Woolen sidelined following arthroscopic knee surgery, Jackson has been working with the No. 1 defense and had the best spring of any Seahawk, according to coach Pete Carroll, who called him 'almost dominant.'"
Jackson, in the 2022 season, collected 63 solo tackles and one interception. He is now doing enough to build off what many thought wouldn't be another season as a starter on the team.
His is definitely a story that will shape up in training camp come late July. But already, it appears that he has done enough to at least be thought of as a third corner in Carroll's defensive system that emphasizes versatility and speed.
And in one way, Jackson playing well makes life a little harder for Witherspoon, who is expected to be an instant contributor on Seattle's defense on day one.
