The New Orleans Saints have a solid roster yet again this season. If they avoid injuries, their depth should have some exciting upside, and their starting units look impressive. Where are they their strongest, though?
ESPN broke down their roster in multiple levels. They included the team's biggest strength and weakness. As for their best unit, the defensive back seven got that nod.
Strongest unit: Defensive Back 7. The Saints have some concerns up front (more on that in a second), but the combination of their off-ball LBs (Demario Davis and Pete Werner), cornerbacks (Marshon Lattimore, Paulson Adebo, Bradley Roby, Alontae Taylor) and safeties (Marcus Mayeand Tyrann Mathieu) is one of the league's best. Davis is now 34 years old, but his play has yet to slip, and Lattimore is a candidate for a big rebound after an injury-plagued 2022 season. — Clay
It's a fair assessment from Clay. The linebacker duo of Werner and Davis is among the league's best. It may reign supreme this season – actually. As for the secondary, they just need to stay healthy.
Last season, they saw tons of success when Lattimore, Mathieu, and Taylor were all on the field together. Roby and Adebo are fine depth at CB. Their safety depth improved through free agency and the draft, too. Smoke Monday will return from injury this year as well, and they like his potential in a role behind Maye.
The defense has the talent on paper. The Saints must make the most of that this year to win the NFC South.
