As Tennessee Titans offensive lineman Nicholas Petit-Frere learned the hard way this week, putting some money on the line for a sports bet is guaranteed to lose when it's done at the team facility.
The second-year right tackle out of Ohio State was suspended for six games by the NFL this week for a violating the league's gambling policy. Petit-Frere placed a non-NFL related bet while at the Titans facility, something he says he was unaware was a violation at the time.
Regardless, the mistake is now going to cost both him and the Titans greatly. Tennessee will need to find a replacement at right tackle for the first two months of the regular season and Petit-Frere is losing a big chunk of change.
According to Sportac.com, Petit-Frere was set to make $952,988 in base salary this season. That comes out to $52,944 every week over the course of the 18 week regular season. Because NFL players do not get paid for time they are suspended, the violation is set to cost Petit-Frere $317,664 this fall, not to mention missed playing time that could impact things down the line.
Other players around the league who received suspensions, like Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams, forfeited future contract guarantees as well. That's an expensive bet to say the least, but the NFL needs to come down hard on players who violate the policies if they want them to be taken seriously.
