The Indianapolis Colts will open training camp in just a few short weeks. Which signals that real football is right around the corner. Shane Steichen will coaching his first game in no time.
While there are several players on the team fully entrenched on the roster, there are others battling for roster spots. Especially at deep units like running back, wide receiver, and tight end.
Therefore, we are highlighting three players that are in real jeopardy of not making the cut when the Colts trim its roster down to the 53. A big training camp could go a long way in shifting the outlook for this trio.
Deon Jackson emerged as a fantasy football star in some ways when star running back Jonathan Taylor was sidelined due to injuries. He rushed for 236 yards and a touchdown in two starts last season.
Normally, Jackson would seem like a safe bet to backup Taylor; however, the Colts have a lot of depth at the position. Jackson could very well be the odd man out of Zack Moss and rookie Evan Hull.
Pharaoh Brown is another player that has showcased some flashes, but plays at a deep position on the Colts' roster. In theory, Brown as a blocker would complement the pass-catching duo of Mo Allie-Cox and Jelani Woods well.
But, like with Jackson, there is competition. For instance, Indianapolis spent a draft pick on Will Mallory out of Miami. And Drew Ogletree is returning from injury. Add in Kylen Granson, who has seemingly cemented his spot, and the odds are not great for Brown.
Finally, Breshad Perriman is another name to watch. Perriman is a speedy pass catcher with the ability to take the top off the defense. But the former first-round draft pick has struggled to remain on the field due to injuries.
If healthy, Perriman can turn heads and push for a roster spot at wide receiver with a strong training camp. It might come down to his preseason performances and how many wideouts Steichen and staff feel are worth keeping.
Colts have no time to waste in one significant regard
The Indianapolis Colts have had an eventful offseason, which will make training camp so important in one key area.
