The Dallas Cowboys have hinted at ways to bolster the special teams. On Thursday, the team finally made a move to potentially do just that. It was announced that the Cowboys have signed kicker Brandon Aubrey.
Cowboys insider Todd Archer broke the news for ESPN. Aubrey, a native of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, had been kicking for the Birmingham Stallions in the USFL prior to being picked up by America's Team.
Such a move will give the Cowboys more competition at kicker. Dallas has opted to not bring Brett Maher back. Instead, Aubrey will battle Tristan Vizcaino for the position in training camp.
Aubrey played soccer at Notre Dame before making the move to football. He performed well for the Stallions and showcased what he can do when kicking the ball through the uprights.
The newest Cowboys addition was accurate on 14 of 15 field goal opportunities during his season in the USFL. Additionally, Aubrey was perfect in extra-point situations, nailing all 35 PAT tries.
He built an impressive resume in the USFL. Aubrey earned all-league honors in 2022 and was the kicker for a pair of championship teams. That has obviously caught the Cowboys' attention.
This is the latest example of the Cowboys using the USFL to add to the roster – specifically to boost the special teams. Last year, Dallas inked former USFL MVP KaVontae Turpin to return kicks.
Perhaps Aubrey gives a similar level of production. At the very least, he will give Vizcaino needed competition in training camp and the preseason as the Cowboys figure out what to do at kicker.
Cowboys could have trick up its sleeve to bolster a key area
A potential dynamic wrinkle for the Cowboys.
