We're almost there. The Detroit Lions and the rest of the NFL will start training camp this month. The Lions will of course start at the very end of the month on the 29th, but it will indeed be in July.

It is now that time of year where we can really start talking about what's going to happen at Lions camp this year. Sadly, we won't be able to go as in depth as we did last year when the Lions were on Hard Knocks, but there will still be plenty of entertainment. Specifically in the camp battle department.

It seems like there's more battles than ever this year. So we're going to split them up and go over them one by one. We've already gone over the RB3 battle, the right guard battle, the kicker battle and the linebacker battle. Today we're going to talk about the CB2 spot.

This might be the best battle of them all. Its also the one that has an outcome that's hardest to predict. It's really and one on one battle here between to undrafted players that have worked their tails off to get to this spot.

On one hand you have Jerry Jacobs. The Lions brought in the former Razorback after the 2021 draft and he immediately got to work at winning everyone over and tried to lean on any corner he could to learn more. Especially Jeff Okudah. Jacobs would wind up making the 53 man roster and eventually would start games in his rookie year due to injuries in the cornerback room.

Jacobs impressed during that time and impressed again in year two. the expectation is that he will continue to get better and be a real threat to win a starting role in year three.

As for Moseley, he went undrafted in the 2018 NFL Draft and the 49ers gave him a chance. He wound up on the practice squad early in his career and then worked his way up to a starting role in San Francisco. He wound up being a big part of the 49ers very good defense in 2021 and 2022. The problem with Moseley is that he keeps getting hurt. The most recent injury is a torn ACL that he suffered in Week 5 of the 2022 season.

When he's healthy, he's a very good corner. If he can stay healthy in Detroit, he could be a big part of this teams secondary and even capture that number two role. Can he do that though?

My prediction

It's hard, but I have to go with the guy that's proven to be more healthy. Even if he did miss some time last year. I'm going with Jerry Jacobs. He has the edge of not coming off an ACL injury and being with the team long enough to have the scheme down. Ultimately I think that Moseley will play a big role on this team and things will work out, I just think it's Jacobs time to show if he can be a full time starter in this league.
