Tennessee Titans running back Derrick Henry has already cemented himself as a franchise legend and one of the greatest running backs of all time. Even if Henry were to not play another snap in the NFL, his career is already worthy of induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Is that a hot take? Maybe, but the pure dominance of Henry over the last four to five years is really rare. If five dominant seasons was good enough for Gale Sayers, why can't it be for Derrick Henry? Since the start of 2018, Henry has the most all-purpose yards of any player in the league. He also has 760 more rushing yards and 20 more rushing touchdowns than the next best running back.
As if that wasn't enough, Henry could still have a few great seasons left in the tank. He has already made a lot of history in a Titans uniform, but number 22 is getting ready to eclipse a few more records in 2023 that would only further his case for Canton.
Henry is within reach of becoming the all-time franchise rushing leader this season. He currently sits with 8,335 career rushing yards. That's third on the Titans/Oilers all-time franchise leaderboard behind Earl Campbell (8,574) and Eddie George (10,009). It will take a 1,675 rushing yard season in 2023 for Henry to take the crown from George, which is certainly possible.
Surpassing George would also make Henry the 32nd player in NFL history to rush for 10,000 yards, but even crazier is the fact that Henry is just 1.675 yards behind George on 983 less carries.
Henry is also one big game away from holding one of the most impressive records in football history. O.J. Simpson, Adrian Peterson, and Henry are currently tied as the all-time leaders for games with 200 or more rushing yards with six. The next highest active total is Dalvin Cook with two. If Henry can get to seven in 2023, he will stand alone atop the all-time greats.
At the very least, the 2023 Tennessee Titans will be fun to watch this fall. Between the possibility of a young quarterback taking over to the potential breakout of Treylon Burks, every Sunday will be must-see TV for Titans fans. But if for no other reason, watch the Titans this season to take in every time Henry gets the ball. You never know when history might happen.
