As the NFL calendar churns toward training camp and the trade and signing machines continue to puke out various scenarios, one that keeps coming up is an interesting and tantalizing talented name — Malik Willis.
And recently, the Tennessee Titans quarterback was named as a potential trade or signing to the Seattle Seahawks by CBS Sports — making life for Geno Smith and backup Drew Lock a little more interesting.
With Willis' future looking a little murky, following his slow rookie season where he enjoyed three starts and never looked great in any of them, CBS Sports' Chris Trapasso names Seattle as one of five high-potential landing spots for Willis around the NFL.
Here is why:
"No one is tantalized more by a possible quarterback reclamation project than gum-chomping head coach Pete Carroll in Seattle. And check that quarterback room! Tiny!
Like Smith, Willis' ability to spin the football will never be questioned. He can really rip it and has more electricity in his legs. Last season, offensive coordinator Shane Waldron did a marvelous job creating an offense that resembled the Air Raid attack Smith operated at West Virginia. He finished the 10th-most passes of 20-plus yards and had the league's best touchdown-to-interception ratio (15:2) on those deep launches. Willis needs an offense like Seattle's. Waldron, a young but surprisingly stout offensive front, and DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett plus a pair of compact, bouncy running backs could provide Willis a comfortable environment to start the next chapter of his NFL career."
Pick your jaw up from the floor, and stop drooling about the likelihood of Willis running Shane Waldron’s offense.
It is a sight that could maximize the quarterback's untapped potential that has been ignored in Tennessee.
If Willis was traded before the start of training camp, that would give him time to acclimate to a new system, one in which he would have the creative freedom to do what he really isn't allowed to do with the Titans.
However, that isn't how everything works out. And frankly, it is difficult to see head coach Pete Carroll singing on to coach a quarterback so similar to Russell Wilson when the two burnt bridges during Wilson's exodus.
Still, it is a fun thought experiment.
And Seattle investing in a young quarterback with plenty to prove would be the perfect outcome after stumbling onto Geno Smith during the 2022 season.
If a move for Willis is to happen, it must happen before training camp. If he is cut by the Titans, Seattle signing him may be too little too late.
