On this day, 24 years ago, Brandi Chastain scored the deciding penalty against China in the 1999 World Cup finals to provide the United States with its second World Cup victory. The USWNT star ripped off her shirt and dropped to her knees with her arms in the air to celebrate.

It was a moment that would live on and be remembered for years to come.

This was just the beginning of a successful run for the United States that is still ongoing, and another champion voices his appreciation the two-time World Cup champion and two-time Olympic gold medalist.

Appearing on the Games with Names podcast in December 2022, Chastain spoke with host Julian Edelman, with the former Patriots star receiver also being no stranger to winning.

Yet, Chastain provided one detail about the infamous penalty kick that many might not know.

USWNT coach Anthony D. DiCicco Jr. went up to Chastain, telling her she was taking the penalty kick, to which she immediately agreed. However, right before he walked away, DiCicco told Chastain that she had to take it with her left foot.

"I'd never taken a penalty with my left foot in a game," Chastain said. "I guess if you ask Tom Brady to throw all the passes with his left hand in the Super Bowl, I wonder if he'd say yes."

So, while Chastain was able to win the championship with an impressive kick from her left foot, it will never be known if Brady could accomplish a similar feat in the Super Bowl by throwing with his left hand.

Edelman and Chastain also shared similar stories of their time preparing for these big games.

Chastain the rest of the USWNT team at the time were not used to playing in such a big stadium, but with the final game being hosted at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, they had to prepare.

During practices, the sound of cheering and screaming was being played so the players could work on communicating with all of that going on in the background.

It was something the Edelman could certainly relate to, with New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick trying to make practices as close to a game situation as possible, whether its make the practice space super dry and humid to prepare for Miami or pumping in loud sound for the environment at Arrowhead Stadium.

And who knows, Chastain could have been playing against Edelman?

"I actually thought I was going to play in the NFL because that's all I saw on television," Chastain said. "I love football, I just didn't know it would be my football."
