If 30 is the new 25, then Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Allen Robinson is in great shape.
Now on his third team in two years, the former Pro Bowl wideout from Penn State is running out of time to get his once promising career back on track. It just so happened that the Steelers were looking for more weaponry to surround second-year quarterback Kenny Pickett.
Robinson is not who he used to be, but he can be much more than he's been in recent years with the Steelers.
Not only will Robinson be a part of an offense that is set to improve in the passing game with an ascending young quarterback, he also proved to be ahead of schedule this offseason.
Per The Athletic's Mark Kaboly, Robinson went from unexpectedly partaking in OTAs, to fitting in seamlessly as Pickett's newest receiver. And his projected role inside will add a new dimension to Pittsburgh's offense.
"Robinson is fully recovered from foot surgery last year. He wasn’t even supposed to take part in OTAs but jumped in midway through and instantly had a connection with Kenny Pickett. The move to the slot shouldn’t be an issue, even though he struggled there last year with the Rams (25 percent of his snaps). His shiftiness and smarts will give the Steelers an option in the slot on third downs and in the red zone they haven’t had in some time." — The Athletic's Mark Kaboly
From 2019-20, Robinson put up 200 receptions, 2,397 yards, and 13 touchdowns for the Chicago Bears. He posted just 71 receptions, 749 yards, and four touchdowns the next two years combined.
Last year was a low point for Robinson, as he never got going with the tumultuous Los Angeles Rams. But it's done nothing to deter him from bouncing back accordingly with a new team.
"I have a lot of football left in me," Robinson recently told Steelers.com. "I thought last year in the time I was playing, in those 10 games, I felt very good about some of the things that I did. Unfortunately, I didn't get some of the opportunities that I may have wanted and things like that. But as far as how I felt as a football player from my route running ability, being able to get active a little bit in the red zone and doing some things like that on third down. I felt very good about last year."
Sharing the field with Diontae Johnson and George Pickens should open up opportunities for Robinson on third down and near the end zone. Having that niche role will allow the soon-to-be 30-year old to find himself again.
