The Dallas Cowboys of old were so remarkably talented that even though so many players have already been immortalized in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, many other worthy players are still waiting for their bronze busts.
One of them is former Cowboys cornerback Everson Walls, who was recently announced as one of the 31 player semifinalists in the Senior category for the Class of 2024.
This advances Walls and the others to the next phase of the election process, where "each committee will now separately consider the semifinalist candidates and vote to advance 12 Seniors (players) and 12 Coach/Contributors through to the next round of the election process, the finalists stage," per the release.
Walls' career in the '80s has always seemed very underrated in hindsight. Most recently, Walls was on fans' radars as Trevon Diggs chased his single-season 11-interception mark in 2021.
But a quick look at his career numbers reveals he's got a Canton-esque resume:
- 3x First-Team All-Pro (1982, 1983, 1985)
- 4x Pro Bowler
- Super Bowl Champion
- 57 interceptions (Tied for 13th most in NFL history)
But it's one particular stat that should blow everyone away and which proves Walls belongs in the Hall of Fame: He led the NFL in picks in three different seasons,* something that only he and the unbelievable Ed Reed have achieved.
If you ask me, that should be enough to get him into Canton, alone.
*Note: Sure, some will dismiss this amazing feat because one of those seasons was shortened by a player strike but an NFL season was still played and he got the most picks. Period.
Known as a player who always brought his best effort to the playing field, Walls was a big reason why the aging Cowboys of the 80s showed up in two NFC Championship Games.
The results of the votes for the finalists stage will be revealed this very month on July 27th.
