The Indianapolis Colts have an exciting rookie draft class as it gears up for a brand new era. Head coach Shane Steichen and general manager Chris Ballard targeted athletic prospects with the ability to make an impact early.
Quarterback Anthony Richardson is the obvious headliner. He was selected in the first-round of the 2023 NFL Draft and is expected to be the face of the franchise. But Richardson is far from the only first-year player with some buzz.
Indianapolis selected cornerback Julius Brents with its second pick in the draft. Brents starred at Kansas State prior to being selected in the second-round. He's expected to play a major role in the Colts' secondary in his first professional season.
Brents earned first-team All-Big 12 honors during his final season on the collegiate level. He started every game for the Wildcats in 2022, making 45 tackles, grabbed four interceptions and recorded eight passes defended.
The Colts defensive back earned the respect of his peers in the Big 12 as he defended high-level receivers like Los Angeles Chargers draft pick Quentin Johnston and Denver Broncos rookie Marvin Mims.
Texas Longhorns star pass catcher Xavier Worthy is viewed as a potential first-rounder in the 2024 NFL Draft. He and Brents matched up in college, and Worthy thinks very highly of what the Indianapolis rookie brings to the table.
Which is encouraging news. Brents tested very well at the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine, which – paired with his impressive tape – caught the attention of Steichen and Ballard as the front office built its draft board.
Brents jumped 41.5 inches in the vertical, ran 4.53 in the 40-yard dash and clocked in a 6.63 three-cone. Now, he will have the opportunity to carve out a significant role during his first season with the Indianapolis Colts.
Colts have no time to waste in one significant regard
The Indianapolis Colts have had an eventful offseason, which will make training camp so important in one key area.
