The Denver Broncos have a player on their team that is considered a dark horse for the MVP award in 2023.
The Broncos didn't have anyone on their roster in 2022 that had a season worth an award. Patrick Surtain was the best cornerback in the league, but he still wasn't good enough to be considered for Defensive Player of the Year.
The rookies weren't good enough to win Rookie of the Year, and Russell Wilson was nowhere near good enough to win the MVP award. The season as a whole was just too bad to be recognized for anything other than being a bad team. But there is a former MVP who thinks a Broncos player is a dark horse candidate for the award in 2023.
Russell Wilson – 40:1 Russell Wilson has been close to winning MVP a couple of times, and despite his train wreck of a season last year with the Denver Broncos, he is certainly more than capable of getting the train back on the tracks. He is now with one of the best coaches and play callers in the game in, Sean Payton, and I expect Wilson to get back to playing with more confidence, production, and consistency. — Rich Gannon, The 33rd Team
Gannon has been an MVP before in this league, so I'd like to think he knows a little bit about elite quarterback play. It has also been noted that he is somewhat of a Russell Wilson truther, too, as he has countlessly tried to defend him and thinks he is still a really good quarterback.
Gannon has also gone on record saying that Sean Payton will be better for Wilson. Maybe running the offense that Payton runs will help Wilson become a guy who is back in that conversation for MVP. Payton will run the ball a ton in 21 personnel, which will only help set up those deep balls Wilson loves to throw, and is good at throwing.
If Wilson is going to be an MVP, he can't have near as bad a season as he did last year. It will need to look something similar to 4,000 passing yards, at least 35 passing touchdowns, a low interception rate, and a pretty good record to go along with everything else. It won't be easy, but Gannon must think it's possible.
