Minicamp and OTAs are a time for guys who aren't established to make a name for themselves. It's a time for the rookies, or undrafted players, and even bubble or fringe roster guys to show they belong. When you pick the winners and losers from offseason workouts, you don't choose guys like Patrick Mahomes as winners because we know he is a winner.

You don't pick guys like Travis Kelce. You pick the guys that did some good things during the offseason and made their name a bit more known. These are the guys you heard a lot about, whether it be other players, media, or even coaches.

Chiefs winners from offseason workouts

Tershawn Wharton, DT

Tershawn Wharton Kansas City Chiefs

Wharton isn't doing anything crazy in these OTAs or even mandatory minicamp. His name isn't one we are hearing a ton, but that isn't a bad thing. He is doing what he is supposed to do. But it's the things happening around him that make him a winner.

Chris Jones is currently holding out of all team related activities, even the ring ceremony (Jones said he was sick(, which only helps Wharton, who is Jones' backup. Wharton doesn't see the field a ton because Jones is, well, the best defensive tackle in football last season. Getting Wharton on the field usually means Jones isn't on.

With Jones holding out, Wharton is getting more attention than usual. He is getting reps in with the ones, and is a guy people have their eyes on. Now, Jones will end up playing for Kansas City, so why does it matter how Wharton is doing? Well, if he show what he can do, makes plays, maybe a team will want to trade for him; one that can offer him a bigger role. Wharton is doing everything right.

Deneric Prince, RB

Whether it be Jerick McKinnon talking about Prince's huge frame or Andy Reid talking about Price impressing Brett Veach, the undrafted free-agent running back is making sure people know who he is. I'm not sure there is a player on the Chiefs' current 90-man roster that has gotten more praise so far this offseason than Prince. Maybe Justyn Ross.

Prince even drew a comparison to a former Chiefs fan favorite in Knile Davis. Dave Toub, the special teams coordinator, said that Prince reminds him of Davis. He also said that Prince has a role on special teams that should allow him to see the field a ton.

"You know some guys that are doing really well right now you probably want to know [about]," Toub told the media. [Deneric] Prince is looking good. He reminds me so much; you guys remember Knile Davis? He reminds me of Knile, even has the same number. Didn't do it in college, but you know he's showing traits right now that so much he reminds me so much of Knile. But it's kind of scary. You know, Knile was pretty good for us. And you know, as he went on, obviously, the touchdowns and you know, so I see him in that role."

It's pretty clear the Chiefs love Prince. He's a winner because he wasn't even supposed to make it this far, being a UDFA. Signing with the Chiefs after the draft may end up being the best decision he could have made.

BJ Thompson, EDGE

Thompson is one of the Chiefs' recent 2023 NFL Draft picks. Thompson is an edge rusher out of Stephen F. Austin and, before that, Baylor. The Chiefs had a need at edge, so they drafted Felix Anudike-Uzomah and Thompson. There's one problem, though; FAU has been hurt.

The reps that FAU was supposed to get Thompson has been getting. The Chiefs are now seeing what Thompson can do and are building trust in him. We have heard some good things about him in camp. Now, he just has to be consistent.

The Chefs are ready for training camp, which starts July 23 at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph, Missouri. There we will see if these winners can continue some of the success we have already seen. Things are starting to get real now, and these guys have to keep doing what they are already doing to be successful. The only thing is, Andy Reid's training camps aren't easy.
