The Chicago Bears have had a below-average wide receiver group for years now.
This offseason, general manager Ryan Poles took a big step in changing that by trading for D.J. Moore and drafted Tyler Scott. The team also traded for Chase Claypool at the 2022 NFL trade deadline further solidifying the group.
Back in 2018, many around the team felt that they had drafted the player that would transform the offense. Five years later, and that player is now fighting for his NFL life.
NFL insider Aaron Wilson reported on Tuesday that the Pittsburgh Steelers have released wide receiver Anthony Miller.
Miller had been with the Steelers in some capacity since 2021. Before the 2022 season, Miller re-signed with the Steelers but would not play a snap after suffering a season-ending shoulder injury in the preseason.
Miller re-signed with the Steelers earlier this offseason, but the team has already decided that the receiver will not make the team. Miller's Steeler tenure ends with one catch for two yards in one game played.
After being selected in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft, Miller instantly got on the field in Chicago. As a rookie, Miller got 33 catches for 423 yards and seven TDs. Miller followed that up with a decent sophomore season, catching 52 passes for 656 yards and two TDs in 2019. Solid production, but not top of the depth chart level.
After a step backwards in 2020, Miller was shipped to the Houston Texans for a late-round pick during the summer of 2021. Miller would play in just two games as a Texan before being waived and latching on with the Steelers.
So Miller has been traded by the team that drafted him, cut by another team just months after trading for him, and now cut by a team that seemingly could use depth at receiver. The Steelers have George Pickens, Diontae Johnson, and Allen Robinson firmly entrenched at the top of the depth chart, but several unproven options behind them.
If Miller can't even make it to training camp in Pittsburgh, will he be able to latch on anywhere? Miller had flashes of that second-round talent, but never consistently made enough plays to cement his spot.
The former Bear will now have two months to latch on elsewhere before the 2023 NFL season begins.
