Ok, we get it. Aaron Rodgers is a polarizing figure. In fact, it’s easy to not like him. But enough already.
Aaron Rodgers has an eccentric personality which can rub many the wrong way. He can be a diva and the way things ended with the Green Bay Packers certainly didn’t go very well with Aaron claiming “bad cell service” was to blame for not communicating with members of the organization.
There are a lot of things to criticize the future Hall of Famer about, but the way he makes a living should not be one of them.
It seems like some people not only dislike the New York Jets QB, but actively look for a reason to criticize him. Make sure to add Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio to that list.
Recently Mike put out a hit piece on PFT targeting Rodgers and criticizing the way the man wants to run a business. Is this what we have come to?
Florio takes issues with the fact that Rodger is looking for fans to help him with his latest project: the Online Sports Database (OSDB). Rodgers has a goal of raising $1.25 million in bridge funding and is doing so by starting a crowdsourcing campaign.
"I like the idea of giving fans the opportunity to invest and get behind something they feel connected to, like OSDB," Rodgers said.
Since the launch, OSDB added information on 26,000 professional athletes. A subscription version of the database is expected to go live in September. Essentially the business is a sports version of IMDB.
Florio opens the article with “There’s a sucker born every minute. And Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers is searching for more than a few of them.”
Why Mike? Because he is looking for outside investment capital?
Does Florio understand how millionaires stay millionaires? Don’t get it wrong, it is not money that anyone should spend if they don’t have it, but who should decide that? Not Florio.
Rodgers comes from the Green Bay Packers, a publicly owned team. You know what has been considered to be a terrible investment for years? Owning stock in the Green Bay Packers. People are still lined up to try and get a piece of it. Why? Fans want to feel like they are part of something.
For Florio to try and crush Rodgers for making money and crowd sourcing instead of using his own personal wealth is something smart businesspeople have been doing for generations. But because Rodgers won’t answer his calls, Florio decides to write a hit piece.
Florio goes on “Meanwhile, Rodgers has the ability to pump $1.235 million into the effort he co-founded with roughly the effort of mustering a snot rocket. Rodgers has the money to pay for his own damn business venture. And anyone who considers giving money for nothing to OSDB should consider politely telling Rodgers and Rottman to GTFO.”
Who is Mike Florio to tell people how to spend their money? This feels like sour grapes from a guy who makes his living trying to get information out of big-name NFL stars and is mad he doesn’t get any from Rodgers.
Recently Rodgers has come under scrutiny again for being a speaker at a “psychedelic science” conference. Rodgers, rapper Jaden Smith and former Texas Governor Rick Perry are all slated to speak at the conference organized by a psychedelic advocacy group. Rodgers will speak with a podcaster about his ayahuasca experience and how he believes it helped his game.
We don’t have to like Rodgers but let him live his life his way. You be you Aaron.
